Through fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction, and/or film, students practice literary research and textual analysis  based on  literary elements and devices, cultural contexts, and reflections of the complex human experience. Authors and texts under investigation may vary but typically illuminate aspects of Creation Myths, Colonization, Enslavement, Abolition,  Enlightenment, Romanticism, Transcendentalism, Regionalism, Realism, and Naturalism. Within this survey, the course may also focus on a theme chosen by the instructor.
